  • ACLC is offering the following ELA and Math courses over the summer vacation. Each course targets a specific grade level and has a minimum of 3 students and a maximum of 8 students. For more information, please call our office at 617-391-0270.

  • Kindergarten Literacy Readiness

    Target Audience: Entering Kindergartners or repeat Kindergartners

    Date: Mondays – July 3, 2017 to August 14, 2017

    Time: 5:30pm to 7:00pm

    Rate: A

    Course Description: In this seven-week Literacy Readiness course student(s) will:

    Print Concepts:

    • Learn to recognize the uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet and their sounds.
    • Follow words from left to right, top to bottom and page by page.

     

    Phonological Awareness:

    • Recognize and produce rhyming words.
    • Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words.
    • Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words.
    • Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or CVC) words.
    • Learn kindergarten sight words.
    • Learn to write their name.

     

     

  • Essay Writing

    Target Audience: Entering 4th and 5th graders

    Date: Tuesdays – July 3, 2017 to August 14, 2017

    Time: 5:30pm to 7:30pm

    Course Description: This seven-week writing course will help students to develop and organize their ideas in writing. We will use the Five-paragraph essay format. The Five-paragraph essay format is the simplest and most common form of essay writing. The basic structure contains an introductory paragraph, three paragraphs forming the main body of the essay and a concluding paragraph.

     

    This course will help students to state clearly the main idea, develop each supporting paragraph and summarize in the conclusion. Additionally, this course will help students to integrate transitions between paragraphs.

     

  • Reading Comprehension/Vocabulary Development

    Target Audience: Entering 3rd graders

    Date: Mondays July 3, 2017 to August 14, 2017

    Course Description: This course will focus on vocabulary development and improving reading comprehension. Some of the reading comprehension skills covered are: identify main idea, supporting details, author’s purpose and plot; make inferences and connections; distinguish between cause and effect, facts and opinions; and ask questions.

    Course Description: This course will focus on reading and analyzing a designated text. The students will:

    • Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
    • Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
    • Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis or series of ideas or events, including the order in which the points are made, how they are introduced and developed, and the connections that are drawn between them.
    • Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how an author uses rhetoric to advance that point of view or purpose.

    Course Description: In this seven-week Literacy Readiness course student will:

     

    Print Concepts:

    1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
    2. Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation).

     

    Phonological Awareness:

    1. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
    2. Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single-syllable words.
    3. Orally produce single-syllable words by blending sounds (phonemes), including consonant blends.
    4. Isolate and pronounce initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in spoken single-syllable words.
    5. Segment spoken single-syllable words into their complete sequence of individual sounds (phonemes).

     

    Phonics and Word Recognition:

    1. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
    2. Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
    3. Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
    4. Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds.
    5. Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.
    6. Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables.
    7. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support and demonstrate comprehension.
    8. Learn the 1st grade sight words.

    Course Description: In this seven-week Literacy Readiness course student will:

     

    Phonics and Word Recognition:

    • Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
    • Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
    • Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.
    • Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
    • Identify words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences.
    • Recognize and read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

     

    Fluency:

    • Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support and demonstrate comprehension.
    • Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
    • Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
    • Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

    Target Audience: 3rd, 4th and 5th graders

    Date: Mondays and Wednesdays – July 3, 2017 to August 16, 2017

    Course Description: The focus of this course is on mastering addition and subtraction math facts. Students will be taught strategies to memorize math facts. They will be able to recall these facts with speed and accuracy.

    Course Description: The focus of this course is on mastering multiplication and division math facts. Students will be taught strategies to memorize math facts. They will be able to recall these facts with speed and accuracy.
